We care about our volunteers having a great experience at Rough Edges. To help you with this we ask all our volunteers to complete a training program before you start volunteering.
Caring for others and yourself
At the course you will learn how to look after yourself and others who are dealing with difficult emotional issues. Often as a volunteer you might find yourself in situations which are confronting and distressing – learning about self-care is an important aspect of preparing yourself to volunteer.
Dealing with difficulties
Sometimes at Rough Edges we have to deal with challenging behaviour. We teach you the skills to talk down someone who is angry or on a drug induced high. We use non violent communication (NVC) strategies to do this. NVC is useful anywhere in your life where you want to reduce conflict and misunderstandings and improve outcomes for yourself and others.
Understanding the issues
It is important that our volunteers have some understanding of the issues that impact our community. We invite several special guests in who will share their stories and experience with living with mental illness, addiction and homelessness. We also have guests from other agencies who talk about the work they do to address some of these problems.
The long course involves one full Saturday from 10am – 3pm and six Monday night workshops from 7.00pm – 9.30pm.
Dates for the 2017 course are:
Saturday 22nd July and Mondays – 31st July, 14th, 21st, 28th August, 11th and 25th September.
You must be able to attend the Saturday to be part of a course. Attendance at all Monday night sessions is expected.
Working full time: $250
If the cost of the course would stop you from volunteering please talk to us about this.
